Count Me In

Digital mammography is one of the most recent advances in breast cancer detection. With digital mammography, images are acquired digitally and can be displayed immediately on the system's computer monitor. The breast image is captured with a special electronic X-ray detector, then, converted into a digital picture that is reviewed on the monitor.

Siemens Medical Solutions' digital mammography system, the MAMMOMAT® NovationDR, makes it possible for magnification, orientation, brightness, and contrast of the image to be altered after the exam is completed to help the radiologist better see specific areas of the breast. A 2005 study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute showed that digital mammography detects up to 28% more cancers than traditional mammography for women under the age of 50 or with dense breasts.1 What's more, less time may be needed because the results are seen more quickly with digital vs. film mammography, which should, typically, mean less anxiety and discomfort for the patient.
